Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Lead Clinical Laboratory Technologist. 

In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for performing and assessing highly technical and complex clinical laboratory tests on specimens for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in a timely fashion. Trains new and current employees; oversees the technical performance of new employees during orientation and less.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory set-up: Preparation of laboratory area, equipment and instrument for testing. Calibrates, conducts performance checks, records and maintains laboratory instruments and equipment according to laboratory policy. Ensures the appropriate and adequate supply of materials is available at all times. Recognizes and corrects instrument malfunction.
  • Planning and Time utilization: Efficiency in adapting to changes in order to facilitate adequate staffing and effective demonstration in identifying and acting on priorities in a timely manner. Demonstrates alertness and adaptability to changes in schedule and work conditions; responds appropriately. Uses time effectively by completing all assigned tasks in a timely manner. Recognizes and deals with priorities.
  • Interpretation and Recording of test results: Exhibits sound judgment in handling and reporting test results. Makes a determination of normal and abnormal test values accurately. Reports information promptly via telephone, laboratory and or hospital information systems. Reviews abnormal cell morphology with respective supervisors. Reviews preliminary diagnosis and consults appropriate reference sources to assist in interpretation. Seeks information or ask assistance from supervisor when necessary regarding difficult or questionable results. Examines prepared stained smears and demonstrates knowledge in interpreting morphology.
  • Employee training/Technical assistance with staff: Trains new and current employees; oversees the technical performance of new employees during orientation and less qualified personnel assigned to the same area. Teaches new employees established procedures and orients existing employees to new or modified procedures. Reviews Histogram printouts and or reports from assigned areas for technical and clerical accuracy. Brings discrepancies to the attention of the supervisor. 
  • Runs and interprets control values to ensure standardization within deviation guidelines. Attempts to troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and reports same to immediate supervisor. Communicates with manufacturers service department dispatch office when unable to rectify inoperable instrument. Receives an ETA and document in shift-to-shift log book. Stores and disposes of contaminated and hazardous materials according to departmental procedures. 
  • Quality Control: Monitors testing equipment, solutions and works environment by following laboratory Quality Control procedure, ensuring the overall reliability of test results. Cleans and calibrates testing equipment according to established preventive maintenance guidelines. Inspects reagents, solution and chemicals to ensure that they are of high quality, that lot numbers, expiration dates and material safety data are noted and recorded. 
  • Specimen preparation and testing: Prepares specimens to be tested. Performs manual and automated tests on blood and body fluids. Identifies and prepares accurately specimens which have been collected by phlebotomy team, nurses or physicians in according to laboratory policies and procedures. Checks samples to ensure correct identification and that it matches with accompanying label to ensure accuracy of recording and reporting of results. Completes all scheduled and stat tests in a timely fashion. Adheres to Laboratorys/Manufacturers safety policies while operating and troubleshooting instruments. Operates instruments according to Laboratory/Manufactures established procedures.
  • Specimen Collection: Synthesizes appropriate patient interaction and identification. Checks pager prior to going on floors. Ensures the test tray is clean and properly supplied. Greets patients in a courteous manner by introducing self and calling the patient by name. If a baby, use T.L.C. If a child, obtain his/her confidence. Does not ask parents or guardians to leave the room. Ensures the name on the transmittal matches patients wristband. Completes all verifications before procedure is started. Uses isolation techniques according to infection control guidelines and making certain that clean disposable gloves are used for each patient. Completes all capillary blood collection in a timely fashion. Communicates with laboratory before returning to the laboratory.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology including a minimum of six years experience including three years experience in Hematology. Clinical Lab Technologist license required. Must be knowledgeable in Quality Control procedures and have had exposure to automated Hematology equipment. Must demonstrate manual dexterity and good communication skills. Position requires the ability to microscopically identify and differentiate White Blood cells along with morphological findings. In addition, visually analyze instrument Scatter plots and Histograms.

Required Licenses: Certified Histotechnician, Clinical Lab Technician-NYS

Preferred Qualifications:
ASCP certification in addition to minimum requirements.

Step 1

Schedule Interviews

If selected to continue the interview process, HR will reach out via phone or email first. Then, depending on your position, they will schedule an interview with unit managers or team members. You are encouraged to dress professionally for all interviews.

Step 3

Receive Offer

If you successfully complete the interview process and are identified as a finalist for the position, we will require that you complete a professional reference process. After evaluating the completed references, a decision will be made on who will receive a preliminary offer. If you receive a preliminary offer, HR will start the onboarding process with an agreed-upon tentative start date.

Step 4

Training & Orientation

You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
